to…. Professionalism!

The graduate-school laurels I’ve been resting on have finally lost their novelty.  (Although, I actually wrote that sentence and then remembered I’d just finished a six-month research gig.)  Well, the comfort of those laurels diminished even faster.  I’ve launched a fresh batch of research and, at long last, have started scouting around for an academic publisher.  What has that got to do with the price of rice on this website?….

Since I’m going to launch a serious effort at publication… and possibly even send my business card (that’s right, dear readers, real business cards) along with my submissions, I realize that people in the publishing industry may actually cast a weather eye at what I’m doing here.  That means some of the more sarcastic, silly, and/or personal stuff is going to have to go.  I may have to pull the Techno Mage in to help me give things a more professional look, and appeal to some of my fellow historians for opinions on content.

Since my approach to everything involves a charming blend of busy and lazy, this could happen later, or sporadically.  Quite incidentally and since I have only a dim notion of how many and/or who my regular readers might be… I’m going to be recruiting readers in the near future, to get some sense of whether my thesis-into-book is on the right track.  Volunteers are welcome to speak up at any time.  (And, let me be the first to say that it’s not boring, like it probably sounds.  Reactions to my thesis were uniformly those of shock, that, unlike the usual academic fare, it was actually as much a page-turner as a thesis could be.  This time around, it’s going to be directed at a lay audience so, unless I totally miss the mark, it should be even more interesting to read than it started out.  It involves murder-by-shovel, treachery, poisoned babies, union violence, an assassination, human suffering in general, villains, heroes, and birds of prey.)

But, some of the content here’s got to change.  It’s all in good fun until the day you realize you want people to take you seriously….
